History
The Takaka Theatre was built in 1910. This grand building was the focal point of Golden Bays social activity. It was used for film screening’s, Balls and performances. In the 1970s a temporary slump caused by TV entering peoples homes. The theatre closed for a brief time, then a local entrepreneur divided the building into smaller spaces loosing the internal grandness of the building.
In 2000 The Wholemeal took over the smaller shops and restored some of the theatres former glory. When the transformation was completed I had rediscovered a hidden jewel in the middle of Takaka. We continued to rent the building until 2016 when The Wholemeal finally purchased the Historic theatre building making it a dream come true.
“The Wholemeal Trading co” opened in 1977. Originally a wholefoods shop supplying alternative foods not stocked by the traditional supermarket ie Lentils, beans, soy milk, tofu and tahini etc.
It was also a haven for the new alternative community who had been settling in golden bay since the early 70s lured by cheap land and idyllic lifestyle, but had not integrated with the more traditional community.
The Name the “wholemeal Trading Company” was invented during a late night session around a fire. The wholemeal served filter coffee and a minimal selection of savoury food.
1991 the wholemeal purchased its first leaver coffee machine quickly upgrading to a new three group Wega. At the time in was the biggest and flashest coffee machine in the nelson district.

Wholemeal today
“When suits mixed with bare feet and beards, teenagers, farmers, mothers and yuppies are all comfortable together, I feel I have achieved the ultimate atmosphere. It is then like an insulated bubble where everybody forgets there prejudices, when society blends”Quote by Wayne Green 2000 Cookbook1
17 years later the philosophy is the same. To cater to a wide range of people, turn good produce into quality food, support ethical companies. Local ingredients as much as we can, organic as much as possible, don’t compromise cost with quality, believe that good energies and good intent create good rewards, be aware of food trends but keep traditional aspects.
